(Bloomberg) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi about the Iran war and an upcoming leaders’ summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, China’s state Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday.

Rubio and Wang exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, Xinhua said, with the Chinese official saying the two countries should manage differences, maintain hard-won stability and prepare well for key high-level interactions. Wang also stressed that Taiwan remained the biggest risk to bilateral ties with the US.

The call comes ahead of a planned mid-May meeting between Trump and Xi, a summit that was delayed after the US launched the war against Iran in late February. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the call.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has accused Beijing of aiding Iran and slapped sanctions on independent Chinese refiners for processing Iranian oil. The sanctions are a bid to ramp up economic pressure on Tehran.

In a separate call Thursday, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed “serious concerns” to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer over recent trade and economic restrictions.

He, China’s economic czar and top trade negotiator, had “candid, in-depth and constructive” exchanges with the US officials, according to a readout from the Chinese government. Both sides agreed to continue using bilateral consultation mechanisms to build consensus, manage differences and promote stable, sustainable ties, according to the statement.

The standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively shuttered by Iranian threats since the war began, has caused global energy prices to rise sharply, with most oil and gas flows from the Persian Gulf heading to Asia — including China — and Europe.

Last week, Trump also made cryptic comments about China possibly providing weapons or other potentially lethal war supplies to Tehran, saying the US Navy had intercepted a “gift” from China bound for Iran.

“We caught a ship yesterday that had some things on it, which wasn’t very nice — a gift from China, perhaps, I don’t know,” Trump said on April 21. “I thought I had an understanding with President Xi, but that’s alright. That’s the way the war goes right?”
