Bergs was already under pressure to keep Belgium's hopes in the tie alive and Cobolli was quick to capitalize on this, clinching a 6-3 win in the first set. However, Bergs found his rhythm on the court soon after, claiming the second set 6-7(5) to force a decider.
The final set witnessed a blockbuster performance from both players. While Bergs always seemed to be in control of the rallies, Cobolli saved seven match points and outlasted Bergs in a 32-point tie break. In his on-court interview after the match, the Italian reflected on his win, saying,
"It's really tough to say something about this match. We played for our countries and fought a lot for this win. In the end, I realised my dream and we are now in the final. I played an amazing match against a great opponent. I played for all of [the supporters], for all of my team, my family, for me. It is one of the best days of my life.”In a separate media interaction, Cobolli admitted that he didn't know the score in the tie-break saying,
“I asked the team, ‘what's the score in the tiebreak’, because I didn't know, I didn't remember. I won this match because I believed in myself for three hours today. I think I had a great attitude for all the match. Now I’m a little bit tired, but I’m ready to recover for the final.”With Flavio Cobolli’s win, Italy moved forward into their third-consecutive finals at the Davis Cup. The team will next face the winner of the semifinals tie between Spain and Germany.
