Washington Sundar failed to consolidate after getting well settled at the crease on Day 2 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15. The left-handed batter perished on 29 runs off 82 balls, getting caught out to Aiden Markram in the first slip off Simon Harmer’s bowling. Sundar’s innings comprised one six and two boundaries.

The dismissal came in the 35th over of India’s first innings. Harmer began his second over with a straightish delivery and then got a similar bowl to turn off the next delivery. The ball landed in a good length region, which induced an outside edge from Sundar before Markram took a regulation catch. Sundar looked shocked at the turn on offer as Harmer broke the 57-run partnership between him and KL Rahul, which lasted 164 deliveries.

Meanwhile, in the match, India were 88/2 after 36.3 overs, with Rahul and Rishabh Pant at the crease. Gill retired hurt for four runs off three balls.

Earlier on Day 1, England were bundled out for 159 in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball, finishing with a five-wicket haul. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets apiece. Axar Patel also scalped one.
