Warriors, Timberwolves named top landing spots for $51 million Lakers sharpshooter

The Golden State Warriors have their sights set on several assets, with LeBron James being atop the franchise’s wishlist.

Another notable asset the Dubs have expressed interest in is a Los Angeles Lakers sharpshooting forward who shot 56.9% from three during this past season’s playoffs.

According to the Stein Line’s Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Warriors will likely battle with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the prolific long-range shooter’s services.

“Sources say Hachimura was very much in play for San Antonio before Tobias Harris rejected an offer to return to the Detroit Pistons,” Stein and Fischer wrote Friday.

“Harris and the Spurs swiftly agreed to a two-year, $31 million deal after San Antonio and Brooklyn were most frequently mentioned as likely Hachimura suitors before free agency officially began Tuesday at 6 PM ET. (The Nets, for the record, should still have an estimated $13-to-$23 million in available salary cap space depending on the final form of the trade they complete next week to acquire Julius Randle from Minnesota.)"

“As the market has developed, sources say Hachimura's representation has now been in contact with Minnesota and Golden State as well. The Timberwolves have a well-chronicled need for a power forward after committing to trade away Randle and Naz Reid so they can pair LaMelo Ball with Anthony Edwards, and Hachimura is said to stand as their current top choice at the position.”

Uniting Stephen Curry with one of the most underrated perimeter shooters in the league would be a wise option for the Warriors if they discover that signing James is no longer plausible. The Curry era in the Bay has been defined by elite, high-volume three-point shooting in off-the-dribble and/or spot-up situations.

Hachimura undoubtedly fits that mold, making him a wing that would be an instant impact contributor in the Dubs’ offense. As Stein and Fischer noted, though, the Timberwolves’ power-forward void could give the franchise the motivation it needs to outbid Golden State.

The race for Hachimura could easily come down to the wire this summer.
