Mets get bad news on potential Freddy Peralta trade return

The New York Mets are almost certainly going to be sellers in one month at the August 3 trade deadline. It's been a rough year, and selling is the best thing for the future of the team.

While the Mets aren't likely to trade anyone under club control beyond 2026, there are some notable players on expiring deals who could be dealt. Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter are two intriguing reliever trade targets, but Freddy Peralta is the most obvious trade chip.

However, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand shared an update on the potential Peralta trade market, revealing some bad news for the Mets on their potential return for the All-Star starting pitcher.

Mets get bad trade news on Freddy Peralta's return package

"After giving up Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat for Peralta last winter, the Mets are unlikely to get a return anywhere close to that this summer," Feinsand writes.

This is not what the Mets would like to hear, but it also shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Even if Peralta was pitching well, the Mets likely wouldn't get the same package they spent to acquire him this past offseason.

Williams and Sproat were a strong package for Peralta, and it's backfired spectacularly this season. Not only are the Mets likely to sell, with Peralta the headliner, but Peralta's trade value has tanked.

This season, Peralta has a 4.81 ERA in 18 starts, including two recent outings where he struggled mightily. The Mets likely won't be able to get as much in return for Peralta as they would've hoped.

Not only is Peralta struggling, but he's just a half-season rental at best. While there is likely to be some clubs showing interest in Peralta, and the Mets could get something decent in return, it won't be close to what they gave up for him half a year ago.

It's a massive shame for the Mets, as not only did they part with some valuable pieces to add Peralta, but he's since struggled during a lost year in2 026, and now won't even be able to recoup close to the value they spent to add him.
