Warriors’ Draymond Green blasts Knicks after controversial hug

New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown and Draymond Green recently shared a hug that has now been heard around the world.

Considering the Golden State Warriors forward has had some ongoing battles with the Knicks—specifically Karl-Anthony Towns—there was a report floating around that suggested that Brown’s embrace with Green after a recent game was not well received in New York.

Draymond Green took to his podcast to respond to that notion.

Draymond Fires Back

It starts with the alleged hard foul.

“Number one, this is basketball,” said Green. “You’re gonna get fouled. Number two, it wasn’t a hard foul. And if it was a hard foul, Karl-Anthony Towns should have gotten up and defended himself. He didn’t because it wasn’t a hard foul, or he didn’t because maybe for other reasons. Nonetheless, he didn’t.”

What is and isn’t a hard foul is always debatable. Green has found himself in some hot water for committing hard fouls that are deemed flagrant, but this wasn’t one of those occasions. There hasn’t been any punishment for Green.

So, back to the main issue…

“Mike Brown and I won multiple championships together, and we collaborated a lot,” Green added. “That relationship is what it is. It ain't changing because it's built. That’s not an inherited relationship. That's two human beings who took time to build that relationship. Mike Brown was at my wedding. He was at my wedding when I got married.”

Brown joined the Warriors’ staff following his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was an associate head coach for Steve Kerr for several seasons. In 2022, he left for the Sacramento Kings.

Similar to most players in all tiers, coaches and players don’t tend to hold grudges or take rivalries too seriously when the game is all said and done. As Green pointed out, he was tight with Brown far before he became the head coach of New York’s basketball team. That bond can’t be broken over an alleged hard foul.
