Leaping through the snow!
Virginia deputies were in for a shock when they found a kangaroo with bloody feet blocking traffic and hopping around in the middle of a snow-filled road.
Nelson County Sheriff’s deputies said they got a call about the runaway roo early Saturday, with the animal suffering injuries after dogs allegedly entered its Arrington wildlife refuge and threatened its baby, local WSET reported.
In the face of danger, the mother jumped the fence, dropped her child, and got the attention of the dogs, leading the pack away to keep the joey safe, deputies said.
The mother kangaroo was eventually found near the intersection of Thomas Nelson Highway and Oak Ridge Road, with the streets made even more dangerous due to the snow and frigid temperatures.
Despite the kangaroo’s injuries, which left a trail of blood wherever she hopped to, police still had trouble capturing the speedy animal.
“I don’t even know if a lasso would have worked on it… You get out of the car and she’s already across the field,” Deputy Robert Richardson said.
With the help of Conservation Police Officer Andrew Sundra, of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, deputies were able to corner the animal in a resident’s yard.
With the animal holding still, its owner was brought in to tranquilize her and help transport the roo back to the wildlife refuge, where she was reunited with her baby.
“The Kangaroo has been returned to its owner, and is expected to make a healthy recovery!” the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
This, however, will not be the last time the deputies come face-to-face with the kangaroo, as the animal is slated to make an appearance at the sheriff’s office Chili Cookoff & Touch-a-Truck event on March 14.
