Vikings offered giant trade package to Patriots for QB Drake Maye

Things would've been very, very different if the New England Patriots had decided to accept a massive trade offer from the Minnesota Vikings for quarterback Drake Maye.

It's a report that's been out there for a while, and it was reiterated by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer in a post on X on Sunday.

Before the 2024 NFL Draft, Breer writes, the Vikings offered their No. 11 and No. 23 overall picks in that draft along with their 2025 first-round pick to the Patriots for the No. 3 overall pick in that year's draft.

The Patriots picked Maye at that spot.

Caleb Williams went first to the Bears, followed by Jayden Daniels second to the Commanders.

The Pats were happy to get Maye, and that's who the Vikings would've liked if they could get there.

Instead, New England denied the offer, and the Vikings ended up making a small move to get J.J. McCarthy with the 10th pick.

The McCarthy pick hasn't aged well. He missed his first season due to a knee injury, and year two was filled with more injuries and a lot of inaccuracy.

Maye, meanwhile, has the Patriots into the Super Bowl in his second season. He and new head coach Mike Vrabel went from 4-13 to 14-3 from last year to this year. Maye put himself into MVP contention.

This story clearly plays out differently if the Patriots had taken that trade. It's only going to be a "What if?" at this point, but it's still fascinating to think about.
