A year ago today, the Los Angeles Lakers stunned the NBA world. They traded for Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks.
No one saw it coming. People thought ESPN's Shams Charania may have been hacked when he shared the news on social media.
But it was really. It was quite the way to start February.
And all told, the Lakers have made great use of Feb. 1 not once, but twice in their trade history.

The first time was in 2008, when the Lakers traded Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittendon, Marc Gasol and two first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol.
The trade for Pau got the Lakers a championship.
Then in 2025, it was Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick to the Mavs for Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris.
The Lakers are hoping that deal gets them at least one ring, too.

Doncic is clearly one of the best players in the NBA. Meanwhile, the Mavs have already gotten a heavy dose of the AD injury woes.
It doesn't appear the Lakers will be making a big move on Feb. 1, 2026.
But hey, when the calendar flips from January to February, you can't count the Lakers out. They have a way of pulling off some special moves on this date.
