Vikings add QB from Colts after J.J. McCarthy injury news

1 hour ago 2

The Minnesota Vikings needed another quarterback this week.

J.J. McCarthy has been ruled out for Week 17 with an injury to his right hand. Max Brosmer will start on Thursday, Christmas Day, against the Lions.

Behind Brosmer is just John Wolford, but he's hurt, too.

So on Tuesday, the Vikings claimed a new guy off waivers: Brett Rypien.

The Colts waived Rypien on Monday before their primetime game, and he didn't make it through waivers, because Minnesota needed the help.

Rypien is the nephew of long-time NFL player Mark Rypien.

Brett Rypien is a 29-year old quarterback who has appeared in 11 career NFL games.

He suited up in parts of three seasons for the Denver Broncos, then in 2023 for the Rams. He actually got into one game for the Bengals this season.

Rypien has started four games in his NFL career and put up a 2-2 record.

His numbers haven't been great: 58.3% completion rate and four touchdowns compared to nine interceptions.

Now, he comes to the Vikings. He'll have to catch up on the offense in a hurry in case Minnesota needs him Thursday. It's quite the quick shift for Rypien.
