Victor Wembanyama shuts down monk theory with surprising reveal about his Game 6 outfit

12 hours ago 7

Victor Wembanyama had a strong Game 6 on Thursday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 28 minutes. His performance led the San Antonio Spurs to a convincing 118-91 victory over the Thunder, forcing a deciding Game 7. But he was already generating massive buzz before he even touched the hardwood.

Before tip-off, Bleacher Report and the NBA's official account posted footage of Wemby walking through the arena tunnel in a long dark green Moroccan-style thobe over gray sweatpants and slides. The clip crossed 2.4 million views, with many on social media speculating it was a Shaolin monk robe, some kind of ritual pregame uniform or a cosplay outfit.

Fashion writers from Forbes quickly pointed out that the look had nothing to do with martial arts or "monk mode" memes. Instead, the traditional African and Middle Eastern garment was a quiet nod to his roots, honoring his Congolese ancestry through his father.

However, after the game, the 22-year-old himself cleared the air surrounding his unique outfit during the French-language portion of his postgame press conference. When a reporter asked if the look was a nod to monks or for Eid, Wembanyama laughed.

"Those are two completely unrelated questions," he replied. "No, it had nothing to do with monks. Yeah, it was for Eid."

The timeline aligns perfectly with the calendar. Eid al-Adha 2026 was observed globally from sundown on May 26 through May 30, placing Thursday’s Game 6 matchup right inside the festival's celebration window.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Islamic holidays and marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The long, loose robe he wore is just traditional dress for the holiday.

So the monk comparisons were wrong. The "ritual warrior outfit" theories were also wrong. Wemby showed up in his Eid clothes, went out and dropped 28 and the Spurs are now one win away from the NBA Finals.

People online only got confused because they rarely see this kind of outfit in an NBA tunnel walk.
