Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 111-103 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday. His impact throughout the matchup earned him a unanimous selection as Western Conference Finals MVP, receiving all nine votes.
It is an outcome that came as little surprise given Wembanyama's influence on both ends of the floor. Following the game, former NBA champion and eight-time NBA All-Star Dwight Howard even claimed that Wembanyama should have won the MVP this season over Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
As for Wembanyama, his sole focus is on the title win now, and he spoke on handling pressure and overcoming adversity.
“I want to do (this) 15, 20 more times,” Wembanyama said following the game. “Let’s hope it doesn’t become an addiction. Maybe it already is.”
Wembanyama set the tone early in the series with a 41-point performance in Game 1 and continued to dictate momentum with a versatile two-way presence. He finished Game 7 with 22 points and seven rebounds to help close out the Thunder.
Wembanyama's playoff run also pushed him into historic territory, as he became the first player in NBA history to record at least 15 made three-pointers and 15 blocks in a single playoff series. He finished the Western Conference Finals with 19 total blocks, the most in a conference finals series since Alonzo Mourning in 2005. He also joined Spurs legend Tim Duncan as the only players in franchise history to surpass 60 blocks in a single postseason.
Following the game, Wembanyama reflected on the journey with a message about resilience and ambition.
"I can go through hurdles that I didn't know those hurdles could get so high,” Wembanyama said. “It's just pushing through, I found resources inside of me, relentlessness. I already knew that, but doing it at this level, I mean, this is the best basketball on the planet that's being played right now... and the crazy thing is, maybe I'm crazy, but I want to do that 15-20 more times. Let's hope it doesn't become an addiction... maybe it already is."
Wembanyama and the Spurs now shift their focus to the NBA Finals, where they will face the New York Knicks in Game 1 on Wednesday.
