Vanderbilt vs. Arkansas prediction: SEC Championship pick, odds, best bet

The SEC Championship is locked in for a Sunday matinee with No. 17 Arkansas set to face No. 22 Vanderbilt. 

Vanderbilt overwhelmed the top-seeded Florida Gators 91-74 in the semifinals with an extremely efficient and balanced attack that controlled the game through their guards. 

Tyler Tanner played his usual big part of that, raking in 20 points with success in transition and half-court sets. He was just one of four Commodores to hit double figures and feast on Florida’s turnovers and poor first-half shooting.

Arkansas returns to the title game after ousting Ole Miss’ magical run by surviving a 93-90 decision in overtime. Darius Acuff Jr. paved the way by scoring five points in the extra time for 24 overall while Meleek Thomas drained a season-high 29.  

It wasn’t much of a contest for the Razorbacks when they defeated the Commodores 93-68 in Fayetteville on Jan. 20. 

Vanderbilt vs. Arkandas prediction, best bet

Arkansas shot 58 percent from the field and controlled the interior, outscoring Vanderbilt 50-20 in the paint and dominating the rebound battle by 12. Vanderbilt struggled against Arkansas’ length, tossing up 31 three-point attempts and falling behind early after a 13-2 Razorbacks run. 

The Razorbacks covered as 1.5-point favorites in that game, but enter Sunday as 2.5-point underdogs at DraftKings Sportsbook.

My eyes are looking more toward Vanderbilt’s efficiency as of late; it’s ranked higher than Arkansas and holds a top-20 status in both KenPom and Torbik’s power ratings. The Commodores have come into their own since that January flop against Arkansas, emphasizing a “read-and-react” system that’s allowed free-flowing basketball. They’re using five-out spacing to create driving lanes and open three-point looks.

They’re not nearly as efficient as Arkansas in three-point percentage, but Vanderbilt has ball-hounded its way to leading the SEC in steals and turnover margin. This has proved it can disrupt any high-pace offense, including Florida, who ranked amongst Torvik’s top-40 teams in adjusted tempo.

Arkansas thrives on its guard play and getting to the free-throw line, but this kind of pressure defense from Vanderbilt — along with their quick rotations — can turn some fouls into turnovers.
