(Bloomberg) — The US and the Philippines conducted their first joint maritime cooperative activity for the year near a disputed South China Sea shoal where China recently sought to boost patrols.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines and US Indo-Pacific Command deployed air and naval assets in the Scarborough Shoal on January 25 to 26, the Southeast Asian nation’s military said in a statement.

The activity — the eleventh of its kind between the longtime treaty allies — risks inflaming lingering tensions between Manila and Beijing in the critical waterway believed to be rich in energy resources.

China last year said it plans to increase its law enforcement after setting up a nature reserve in Scarborough Shoal, which it calls Huangyan Island. The Philippines protested the move, and asserted its jurisdiction over the chain of reefs where Filipinos go to fish.

In 2025, the area was the site of a collision between Chinese and Philippine vessels. A Singaporean-flagged general cargo vessel early this month capsized near the shoal, with Chinese authorities involved in the rescue of Filipino crew members.

The Philippine military said in its statement that it’s committed with the US to “strengthening maritime security, enhancing operational interoperability, and upholding a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region.” The military drills enhanced coordination, tactical proficiency and mutual understanding between allied forces, the armed forces added.

China’s embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Beijing claims large swathes of the South China Sea, which has been the center of longstanding geopolitical tensions with Manila.
