When Carolina Panthers reserve tight end Feleipe Franks executed what teammate Ja'Tavion Sanders declared as a "win," but the disputed NFL mandatory minicamp practice catch was set to "go to replays," coach Dave Canales said on Tuesday.
While Sanders was adamant in his resolve, the third-year tight end dashed out onto the practice field behind Bank of America Stadium and yelled: "That’s a ******* catch,” the three defensive backs covering the play and their peers passionately called for an incompletion.
The trash-talk over Tuesday's play reverberated into Canales' post-practice press conference.
"It's going to go to replays, and if it was close, there will be a free-throw shoot-off to decide that one," Canales said. "If it's close, it's going to go to free throws. Sometimes we do trivia, different things like that. We've done putting with different guys, and that's hilarious sometimes. And then we also get to learn if they can shoot or not."
Franks, a former major college quarterback, proved he could shoot. Before beginning his summer break, Sanders said during a phone call Thursday that Franks defeated rookie safety Zakee Wheatley in a basketball shootout, claiming the offseason training activities (OTAs) catch crown.
"You know you won? The offense," Sanders said excitedly.
Canales, who "ordered up" a few "hot" practices Tuesday and Wednesday, rewarded the players by cutting Thursday's session. The Panthers will be off until reporting for training camp on July 22.
The Panthers are scheduled to stage nine practices before appearing in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 6.
With an extra preseason game and two joint practices, Canales promised during Thursday's teleconference that the defending NFL South champions would experience "the hardest (training) camp they've ever had."
