Tyra Banks Addresses ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Backlash
It's time to pull back the curtain on America's Next Top Model.
Tyra Banks, who hosted the competition reality series for its first 22 seasons, is among those speaking out about the show in a new documentary called Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, which hits Netflix on Feb. 16.
"I haven't really said much," the 52-year-old says in a trailer for the film released Jan. 26, "but now it's time."
At another point, she explains that she "wanted to fight against the fashion industry" with the controversial show, which ultimately ran for 24 seasons, but also admits that she pushed things past the limit to accommodate the fans.
"I knew I went too far," Tyra concedes. "It was very very intense, but you guys were demanding it, so we kept pushing. More and more and more."
Several of the series' original judges are also featured in the doc, including J. Alexander and Nigel Barker, who at one point says that they "felt betrayed" by Tyra. The show's creative director Jay Manuel also appears in Reality Check.
"I realized Tyra would do anything for the success of her show," he says in the trailer. "You want to talk about being slapped across the face and then slapped right back?"
The supermodel had previously acknowledged that the show, which has come under scrutiny in recent years for a variety of accusations like fat shaming, problematic photoshoots and extreme makeovers, hadn't aged well in everyone's eyes.
"Over 20 years ago I created a show called America’s Next Top Model," she said while accepting an award at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards in Feb. 2025. "And you guys have no idea how hard we fought to bring the diversity to that television show at a time when it didn’t exist."
"To show different beauties at a time when the world was like, ‘What? You casting that?'" Tyra continued. "I was like, 'Why can the girl from the trailer park become a supermodel but the girl that's chillin' in the park in the hood can't?' And we fought and we struggled and we made it happen."
She added at the time, "Did we get it right? Hell no. I said some dumb s--t."

The Life Size actress went on to defiantly defend her legacy.
"I refuse to have my legacy be about some stuff linked together on the internet when there were 24 cycles of changing the world," she proclaimed. "And I am so excited that I, and so many of us, have opened that door for others to follow."
