Triple H was met with a hostile reaction when he came out to the ring at the end of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XLII. The fans booed WWE's Chief Content Officer for booking John Cena to tap out to Gunther in his final match.
The crowd in attendance in Washington, DC, was left stunned when the 17-time world champion tapped out for the first time in over two decades in his final match. They voiced their disapproval at the finish and also showered Triple H with boos when he came out to the ring to embrace Cena. On the latest edition of Story Time With Dutch Mantell, the former WWE manager pitched an idea for The Game to turn heel following the vicious reaction from the fans and join forces with The Rock:
"He is a great heel anyway. Now watch Triple H because he’s going to take this, one thing in wrestling I’ve always used, and I think any booker that’s worth his salt… anybody that has booked learns by trial and error or by design or not, never fight the fans. If they are giving you a message that they hate your a**, go with it. Because it’s easier to get them to hate you since they’ve started that way. I would lean into that deeper, and tell the fans I don’t care what you think. Now you go against the fans... There’s got to be somewhere in here for Rock to come back somewhere… The thing is, if you know there’s a Rock, the real one at your request, at any time could step in, that’s a good feeling to have and that’s a good option to have." WWE veteran in disbelief about Triple H keeping his role as Chief Content Officer
Fans and legends have voiced their criticisms over Triple H's booking decisions with John Cena's last match. Among them is former WWE head writer Vince Russo, who was in disbelief about the Chief Content Officer not getting fired on his 'The Brand' podcast.
"I bring this up all the time. You know, numbers continue to go down. We're seeing trends. They lost FOX. ESPN is allegedly not happy... Right off the bat, they're out of Netflix's Top 10 for two weeks in a row... How can anybody look at this booking of John Cena's farewell tour from day 1 to what we saw over the weekend? How can anybody look at the entire picture and say, 'How in God's name does Triple H not get fired?" Russo said. With Cena's storied career now over, it remains to be seen how Triple H books the rest of the roster with WrestleMania season around the corner.
