Triple H took a shot at Vince McMahon at Saturday Night's Main Event, a WWE veteran has claimed. The show on December 13 was the final appearance of John Cena as an in-ring competitor.
The ending of the match saw the 17-time World Champion tap out to Gunther to end his legendary career. The moment left fans shocked, and Michael Cole's words on the commentary signaled a change of guard.
Cole said tonight professional wrestling destroyed sports entertainment, which can be taken as a reference to the contrasting on-screen personalities of the two competitors.
While these words will be associated with the match forever, former WWE writer Vince Russo has said there was a different idea behind it. Speaking on Behind The Turnbuckle Studios' Coach and Bro, he claimed that it was a direct shot by Triple H at Vince McMahon.
Shocking title change taped for last SmackDown - Watch Now!
"Real interesting Michael Cole's comment about, you know, professional wrestling just defeated sports entertainment, which has to be— I mean, if that's not a direct Triple H shot at Vince McMahon, I don't know what is," he said.As WWE fans know, Vince McMahon saw his product beyond wrestling and appealed to the casual audience. HHH, on the other hand, is seen more as an old-school wrestling booker.
Russo also added that the reason why McMahon wanted to refer to WWE as sports entertainment is because he wanted to compete with other entities like the NBA and NFL. However, by calling it as pro wrestling there is a chance of limiting the brand's potential.
Vince Russo said Triple H could be replaced soon
During the conversation, Vince Russo said he doesn't see Triple H staying in his current role for long.
He said it is possible that TKO sells WWE to Saudi Arabia within the next two years, and he could see Vince McMahon coming back to power. He said McMahon could even orchestrate the deal to eventually replace The Game.
HHH's booking has been questioned by the fans over the last year, especially how John Cena's retirement tour was handled. It remains to be seen if TKO retains faith in him for the long run.
