As the campaign approaches, teams around the league need to evaluate their pitching depth and consider where additions might be needed. Even teams with elite rotations often look for arms who can provide innings later in the year, especially if injuries or performance become an issue.
The Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays are two teams that could be in the boat.
Michael Brauner thinks Eric Lauer of the Toronto Blue Jays could potentially become a trade candidate depending on how Toronto’s rotation looks.
“While someone like Mitch Keller is probably off the table at this point — as well as unnecessary — depth pieces at the back of team rotations are where Hoyer seems to really excel,” Brauner wrote.
“Names like Eric Lauer of the Toronto Blue Jays or Landen Roupp of the San Francisco Giants stand out as people who could have a tough time cracking their respective rotations and could be on the block,” Brauner added.
For Toronto, the decision would likely come down to how the team thinks its pitching staff will look. If the Blue Jays find themselves with more starting options than available rotation spots, a pitcher like Lauer would draw interest from teams looking for depth.
