Team India are not used to being overrun in their own, familiar conditions, but there have been select occasions where the opposition sides have run them ragged. The Men in Blue are known to pile on runs and put pressure on the opponent, but there have been instances where they have had to have a taste of their own medicine.
Since 2010, only four visiting teams have been able to record over 500 runs in an innings in India, which showcases how rare the feat is. The Indian spinners have almost always ensured to keep the opposition batters in check, preventing them from posting lavish totals.
However, India have been guilty of taking the eye off the ball at times, and also being complacent to allow the opponents to take control on their own turf. A mammoth score in the subcontinent is almost a sure shot guarantee of avoiding defeat, which is most opponents' aim while touring the country.
On that note, let us take a look at the top five highest team totals versus India at home since 2010.
#1 590 (India vs West Indies 2011; 3rd Test; Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai)
The highest total ever recorded by an opposition side on Indian soil was by the West Indies during their 2011 tour of India. In the series finale at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the Men in Maroon amassed a massive 590 run total in the first innings, as Darren Bravo struck a sublime 166, while five other batters crossed the fifty-run mark.
It marked one of the rare instances where each of the top six batters recorded at least a fifty.
In reply, India scored 482, and dragged themselves back into the contest by bowling out the visitors for 134 in the second innings. Chasing a 243-run target in the final innings, the score incredibly ended on 242-9 at Stumps on Day 5, for the Test to be declared as a tie.
#2 578 (India vs England 2021; 1st Test; MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai)
In India's first-ever Test at home since the COVID-19 break, they were made to toil hard by a visiting England team. Star batter Joe Root, particularly, had the bowling attack under his thumb as he smashed a memorable double ton as England batted out 190.1 overs in the first innings to post 578 runs.
India could not quite match England's heroics with the bat as they conceded a massive lead. Although Virat Kohli and co. responded strongly by bowling the visitors for 178 in the second innings, they also collapsed to just 192 in the final innings to register a defeat by 227 runs.
#3 558-6 (India vs South Africa 2010; 1st Test; VCA Stadium, Nagpur)
South Africa's last Test win on Indian soil prior to the ongoing tour was in 2010, as they racked up a comprehensive and memorable win by an innings and six runs. In the historic win, the Proteas had put up 558-6 in the first innings, with Hashim Amla scoring an unbeaten 253 while batting for over 11 hours.
Team India were completely outplayed after Dale Steyn bagged a ten-wicket haul, which included a seven-fer in the first innings. Although Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar scored hundreds in the first and the second innings, respectively, they lacked support from the other batters to register a forgettable performance.
#4 537(India vs England 2016; 1st Test; Rajkot)
England's tour of India was rife with massive totals, and the very first innings of the series witnessed the visitors put up 537 runs. All three of Joe Root, Moeen Ali, and Ben Stokes registered hundreds to make a massive statement upfront.
India were able to make the most of a sublime batting surface to respond with a first innings total close to what England put up. Centuries by Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara guided the hosts to 488.
While England managed to post a competitive target with the slender run out, they ran out of time as the contest ended in a tame draw. India still had four wickets in hand at Stumps on Day 5.
#5 489 (India vs South Africa 2025; 2nd Test, Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati)
The last thing Team India wanted in a must-win encounter to correct a 0-1 deficit was a dominant performance by South Africa. While the hosts had a solid outing on Day 1, picking up six wickets, they were completely outplayed on Day 2.
The lower-order trio of Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, and Senuran Muthusamy frustrated the Indian bowlers to a great extent, leaving them completely deflated at one stage. Muthusamy managed to record a stunning hundred, while Jansen missed out on the three-figure landmark by just seven runs.
The massive total of 489 proves to be an uphill task for India as South Africa batted for nearly two whole days after winning the toss.
