Tom Selleck has spoken.
The “Magnum, P.I.” alum has finally addressed whether he might make a cameo in the new “Blue Bloods” spinoff, “Boston Blue,” following the original series’ surprising cancellation.
“I don’t know if I would do ‘Boston Blue,'” Selleck, 80, told Hour Detroit during a recent interview. “That’s another show.”
“I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure ‘Blue Bloods’ has its place in television history,” he explained. “But I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
Selleck portrayed Frank Reagan, an NYPD officer and later police commissioner, on the hit CBS show from its 2010 premiere until its finale last year.
The series also starred Donnie Wahlberg (Danny Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan) and Will Estes (Jamie Reagan).
Despite being one of CBS’ best-performing programs for its entire 14-season run, the network announced its cancellation in November 2023.
The final season concluded last December, and “Boston Blue” kicked off this past October.
“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” Selleck said regarding the “Blue Bloods” cancellation. “If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”
Selleck previously shared his career plans after “Blue Bloods” during a chat with Parade shortly before the show’s series finale.
“I don’t know where my next job will take me,” he said last year. “A good Western is always on my list. I miss that. I want to sit on a horse again.”
“I would love to do another comedy. The right kind of comedy,” the “Three Men and a Baby” star continued. “‘Friends’ made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing.”
At the time, Selleck expressed an interest in returning as Frank Reagan in “Boston Blue.”
“I’m open to suggestions, because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” he told the outlet. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere.”
Wahlberg, meanwhile, revealed what Selleck thinks of the new “Blue Bloods” spinoff during a more recent chat with Parade last month.
The “Saw” star has reprised his role as Danny Reagan for “Boston Blue.” The show sees him leave NYC for Boston after his son, Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen), joins the BPD.
Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez) and Noynahan have already made guest appearances in the spinoff, leaving open the possibility that Selleck may eventually show up as Frank Reagan.
“Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do,” the “Band of Brothers” star, 56, told the outlet shortly after “Boston Blue” premiered on Oct. 17.
“And I can’t really get into the details of those conversations, but he’s been very supportive,” he added. “I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes.”
Wahlberg, however, admitted that Selleck must be the one to ultimately decide whether he returns for “Boston Blue.”
“Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show,” he said.
“When the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it,” Wahlberg concluded.
