Timberwolves, Warriors nearly ended up with each other’s franchise cornerstones

With the Golden State Warriors Game 7 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night, the have advanced to the Conference Semi-Finals to face the Minnesota Timberwolves. Game 1 of this series will tip-off on Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Last year in the postseason, the Timberwolves advanced to the Conference Finals before being eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks. If they want to reach the Conference Finals for the second consecutive year, Minnesota will have to go through a tough Warriors team.

As preparation begins for the series, a quick visit in history shows an interesting hypothetical that both the Warriors and the Timberwolves could've ended up with each other's franchise player. Going back to the 2009 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves selected guard Jonny Flynn with the No. 6 pick. Just two picks later, the Warriors selected Stephen Curry. Instead of Flynn, Minnesota could've ended up with the four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP Curry.

Fast forward to the 2020 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves drafted Anthony Edwards with the No. 1 pick. Just one pick later, the Warriors selected James Wiseman with the No. 2 pick. With his stock being so high going into the 2020 Draft, imagine the Timberwolves selecting Wiseman instead of Edwards.

Both Edwards and Curry are the faces of their franchises. For the first time in their careers, the two will clash in a best-of-seven series to determine who will reach the Conference Finals. With this trip down memory lane, it adds some additional excitement to a series that will already bring lots of viewers. The fact that both of those draft classes could've went so differently and both teams could've ended up with each other's star player is stirring.
