During the trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers looked to bolster their bullpen with the hopes of a deep postseason run. They did this by acquiring Kyle Finnegan in a trade with the Washington Nationals for Josh Randall and R.J. Sales.
He performed well, excelling in high-leverage situations and securing a few saves. He compiled a 1.50 ERA on 16 appearances, totaling 18 innings of work.
However, the club is at risk of losing him. He will become a free agent when the season concludes and could generate a substantial market for his services following his performance during the 2025 season.
Tigers urged to re-sign high-leverage reliever over the winter
The old saying in baseball is, "You can never have too many arms," and that still rings true after all these years. While Detroit's front office may feel good about Will Vest as their closer, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller believes the front office should seriously entertain bringing Kyle Finnegan back.
"Finnegan struggled a bit toward the end of Detroit's time in the postseason, but he ended up being one of the better trade deadline acquisitions, providing the Tigers with a 1.50 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in his 16 regular-season appearances after relocating from Washington. Though Will Vest is still Detroit's closer, having Finnegan back for high-leverage seventh and eighth inning spots could be huge."
Keeping Finnegan around likely would not cost the club much either. He is expected to sign another one-year deal after signing a one-year deal with the Nationals last February.
