The Detroit Tigers took a gamble promoting their top prospect and the MLB’s No. 2 overall in Kevin McGonigle to the major league roster ahead of Opening Day. However, this move could cause consequences for another Detroit star.
According to FanSided’s Jake Elman, the Tigers could trade their three-time All-Star shortstop in Javier Baez, as McGonigle has been slated in front of him on the depth chart. It’s not like he’ll start in his other position at center field, as Parker Meadows is ahead of him there as well.
“Despite never playing above Double-A, McGonigle did enough to win a spot on the 26-man Opening Day roster. The left-handed hitting shortstop is expected to make his MLB debut on Thursday against the San Diego Padres and Nick Pivetta, a righty…We also need to start asking whether the Tigers could finally part ways with Javier Báez this summer, as he has a 10-team no-trade clause and will become a free agent after next season,” Elman wrote.
This past season, Baez proved he was still a star, slashing .257/.282/.398/.680 with 17 doubles, 12 home runs, and 57 RBI in 126 games. He also earned his third All-Star nod, the first since 2019, as before the All-Star Break, he was hitting .275, had 10 of his 12 home runs, and 39 of his 57 RBI in 79 games.
Baez is currently on year five of a six-year, $140 million deal, and doesn’t have a starting spot. Other teams could be interested in the veteran, as he has championship experience, as he helped break the Chicago Cubs’ curse in 2016, and is a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove as well.
Hopefully, the Tigers find a suitor for the old star, as his path to a starting spot in Detroit is looking harder and harder.
