The Detroit Tigers got some very concerning news on Monday afternoon, with Tarik Skubal being scratched from his start on Monday night against the Boston Red Sox.
Jon Heyman of The New York Post made a report that this was a precautionary move, which, while still concerning, wasn't the worst news possible.
However, the Tigers got some terrible news, as Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports that Skubal has loose bodies in his elbow, is headed for the injured list, and will require surgery.
Tigers get terrible news on Tarik Skubal
"Tarik Skubal is going on the injured list," Staevnhagen reports. "He has loose bodies in his elbow and will need surgery. Unclear on timeline for now."
This is some truly awful news for the Tigers. Tied atop the AL Central with the Cleveland Guardians, and already without Casey Mize and Justin Verlander, this is some brutal news for Detroit.
Not only are the Tigers losing Skubal for the Monday night start, and for some time this season, but he's headed for surgery, and could be out for a while longer as well.

So far this season, across seven starts, Skubal has a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts and a 3-2 record. He now lands on the injured list and will miss some time.
Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, Keider Montero, and a crop of other depth options will need to step up in his absence.
Skubal is set to miss 2-3 months now due to this surgery, as the Tigers suffer a brutal blow with their ace just a few days into the month.
