Blue Jays' Tyler Rogers is 51 degrees different than any other pitcher in MLB

Tyler Rogers is different.

It only takes one pitch from the Toronto Blue Jays' submarining right-handed relief pitcher to realize that. He throws like he's trying to pull weeds out of the dirt on the way to home plate.

But how different? Well, turns out that baseball is almost entirely devoid of guys who throw like this.

From the right side, there's simply no one like Rogers in MLB.

The only other pitcher with substantial action this season who throws from a negative release point (sub-0 degrees) is Ryan Thompson of the Tampa Bay Rays, and he's at negative-10 degrees.

Rogers is at negative-61 degrees.

Here's how that looks in graphical form:

All but two right-handed pitchers who have thrown at least 100 pitches this season have a positive arm angle.

It certainly works for Rogers. It's also quite tough to teach, because most coaches have never thrown like that in their life.

Rogers also has the irony going in which his twin brother Taylor is left-handed and throws incredibly over-the-top.

Somehow, though, Tyler Rogers became baseball's master submariner. It's fun to watch, and it's worth appreciating, because there's no one else like him anymore.
