AEW is red hot after Worlds End this week. However, one of the major stars missing from the action was Chris Jericho.
Chris Jericho was one of the first major stars signed by AEW back in 2019. In fact, he was the first AEW World Champion and carried the company during its initial days. During his tenure with the company, the star worked some programs with up-and-coming wrestlers that established them as top stars in the promotion.
Let's look at three times the Ayatollah of Rock 'n Rolla put the company's interest ahead of himself and did the selfless thing.
#3. He put over Orange Cassidy
Chris Jericho and Orange Cassidy’s rivalry in 2020 was a defining storyline for the promotion. Jericho was the arrogant veteran clashing with Cassidy, the unlikely underdog.
After several run-ins and a Fyter Fest encounter, the feud culminated at All Out 2020 in the over-the-top Mimosa Mayhem match. Jericho put over Cassidy, making him an instant star. The rookie dunked Chris into a tank with 80 gallons of orange juice and 500 cases of bubbly for a resounding win.
#2. He made MJF a star
Long before MJF was the AEW World Champion, he was part of Chris Jericho's Inner Circle. However, Friedman's hunger for the top spot led him to betray Y2J and break the group. The rivalry had animosity coupled with some hilarious segments like Le Dinner Debonair.
MJF seemed like he would end the veteran's career as he forced the star through The Labors of Jericho, which included five challenges to earn a match at AEW All Out 2021. Friedman finally picked up the win at The Final Fight, solidifying him as a top star in the company.
#1. He helped Sammy Guevara
Jericho is often credited with making Sammy Guevara a major star. Their story evolved from mentorship to betrayal to redemption. During his Inner Circle run in 2019, Y2J selected Guevara as his loyal protégé.
This group gave Sammy a lot of TV time and helped him hone his skills in the ring. Over the years, the two stars stayed together. However, their friendship exploded in 2023 when Guevara turned on Jericho after Dynamite: Grand Slam. Guevara even defeated Jericho at WrestleDream. However, Sammy's alliance with the Don Calis Family didn't last long, as he returned in December 2023 as a face and decided to help Jericho. The duo even reformed the "Le S*x Gods" tandem.
Chris Jericho's contract is set to expire at the end of this year. There are speculations that he may show up in WWE for a farewell tour. It will be interesting to see where the veteran wrestler shows up next in the coming months.
