Mohamed Salah was treated to a huge ovation from the Anfield crowd at the final whistle of the match between Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. It was an emotional moment for Salah as it marked his final appearance for the club before joining the Egyptian national team for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Prior to the game against Brighton, Salah had been himself omitted from the Liverpool squad that flew to Italy for the Champions League clash against Inter Milan last Tuesday, following his outburst in which he hit out at the club and head coach Arne Slot.
The 33-year-old’s inflammatory remarks not only disrupted the equilibrium at Anfield but also didn’t sit well among pundits, most notably former Reds defender Jamie Carragher. Carragher initially went on an eight-minute rant on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, branding Salah’s comments a ‘disgrace,’ and repeatedly took aim at the forward, most recently in his column for The Telegraph.
Slot told reporters in a press conference on Friday that he will hold talks with Salah, and both parties apparently reached a truce, as the Dutchman included Salah in his squad that faced Brighton, although as a substitute.
However, he was sprung into action much earlier than expected. Joe Gomez, who assisted Liverpool’s first goal against the Seagulls, was forced off with an injury after only 25 minutes. Salah was summoned from the bench to replace the defender, with Dominik Szoboszlai reverting to right-back.
Salah went on to make history on his return, assisting Hugo Ekitike for Liverpool’s second and becoming the player with the most goal contributions for a single side in Premier League history.
Fans initially gave the forward a rousing reception when he replaced the injured Gomez and repeated the same gesture at full-time. After the match, Salah posted a video of him on social media being serenaded by the Reds faithful, and fans flood the comments to show their support for the Egyptian King.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says he has ‘no issue to resolve’ with Mohamed Salah after outburst
Arne Slot said he has ‘no issue’ to resolve with Mohamed Salah following an outburst that saw the forward excluded from his squad. Salah had accused Liverpool of throwing him ‘under the bus’ after he was left on the bench for three consecutive games.
Speaking to reporters after the game against Brighton, he downplayed suggestions of a rift between himself and the forward, saying:
“For me, there's no issue to resolve. For me, he's now the same as any other player. You talk to your players if you are happy or unhappy with things. But there's nothing to talk about after what happened against Leeds after the game.”Slot also dismissed suggestions that Salah has played his last game for the club, but remained cagey on whether the player has expressed his desire to stay.
