With The Witcher 4 on the horizon, publisher CD Projekt RED may be working on DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the critically acclaimed Game of the Year 2015 open-world action-RPG title. Reportedly aiming for a 2026 launch, it will seemingly bridge the gap between the 2015 game and the upcoming next-gen successor starring Ciri.
Here's what we know about this rumor so far. Read on to know what this could mean for The Witcher 3 fans and the series' future entry.
When could The Witcher 3 DLC release?
The base game revolved around Geralt's adventure as he tracks down Ciri's whereabouts to save her from the titular Wild Hunt (Image via CD Projekt RED)The rumor comes from an analyst, Mateusz Chrzanowski, at Noble Securities, who suggests that this new The Witcher 3 DLC will arrive in May 2026. Interestingly, it is also said to be paid content that users will have to purchase on their platform of choice to indulge in.
This is in stark contrast with more recent content, such as The Witcher Netflix DLC, which was released to fans for free, suggesting this is something much bigger. This puts it in line with past content for the game, like Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine, as well as the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023 for their 2020 sci-fi game Cyberpunk 2077.
The DLC specifics remain a mystery; it most likely has something to do with the upcoming ambitious sequel game, The Witcher 4, and may bridge the gap between the two titles. As fans will remember, the 2015 game canonically ended with Ciri setting out on the path towards becoming a Witcher after protagonist Geralt gifts her a Witcher sword.
Fast forward to The Witcher 4, and we know that the princess of Cintra is now the new heroine, carrying Geralt's legacy forward as a mutant monster slayer with her own story arc unfolding across a new region. This was the natural progression of the game's lore, since the books they are based on, from author Andrzej Sapkowski, feature Ciri at the center of the entire overarching plot.
It is also unclear what platforms this DLC could target; however, if Cyberpunk 2077's paid expansion and the next-gen update for The Witcher 3 are anything to go by, only current-gen systems will likely get this content. This includes PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and perhaps Nintendo Switch (with a potential native Nintendo Switch 2 version alongside it).
