Since its January debut, The Pitt Season 2 has reunited us with Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa), and dozens of other familiar faces from the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s ED. One Season 1 standout who has not appeared on the HBO Max hit yet? Shawn Hatosy‘s Dr. Jack Abbot.
Hatosy won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work playing the military veteran who manages PTMC after dark. While he briefly appeared in the very first episode of The Pitt, Abbot’s popularity surged when he arrived at the ED to help with the mass casualty event that took over the show’s final arc. How did he hear about it? Oh, he heard about it on his own personal police scanner.
We are almost halfway through the second season of The Pitt and still there has been no sign of Abbot. When DECIDER chatted with Shawn Hatosy (paired with Dr. Al-Hashimi actress Sepideh Moafi) during the Season 2 junket, we pointed out that we hadn’t seen him yet in the first six episodes. When we joked we weren’t even sure he was in the new season, Hatosy quipped, “Well, I’m here, so I think.”
Hatosy then teased what will prompt Abbot’s dramatic return to The Pitt Season 2.
“Abbot comes in [Episode 7], he’s working SWAT that day,” Hatosy said. “He’s on a SWAT team. They take a doctor with them often in case something goes wrong and they usually bring somebody who has training in both worlds. So Abbot fits perfectly. That’s what he does on his days off.”
Hatosy then connected the dots between Abbot’s Season 1 and Season 2 entrances. “That’s why he’s listening to police scanners,” he said.
HBO Max has already confirmed, via The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7 teaser, that Abbot will be bringing one of his SWAT comrades into the ED this week.

“‘SWAT? Really?‘” Moafi said. “I think that’s a line [I say].”
Like Dr. Jack Abbot, Shawn Hatosy enjoys a bit of a side hustle at The Pitt. In addition to appearing on the show, Hatosy also directs The Pitt Season 2 Episode 9. When we mentioned how Noah Wyle had revealed being a cast member ironically provides more access to the set for prep, Hatosy concurred, while sharing a unique hiccup he encountered.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s such a unique show in that the set is 95% of where the action takes place,” Hatosy said. “So yeah, it’s a huge leg up being there all the time, knowing each room, knowing the architecture and landscape of PTMC.”
“It’s funny because when I’m working on [Episode] 8 as an actor, it’s like I’m supposed to be in the world of 8, but you can’t help but think, ‘Well, that scene is going to be there. And I just saw this actor do this really cool thing,'” he said. “You know what I mean? It’s hard to sort of compartmentalize.”
“But this show has such terrific actors — actors and writers — and to be able to explore that journey as a director, it was so rewarding and I hope I get to do more.”
The Pitt Season 2 Episode 7 premieres tonight at 9 PM ET on HBO Max.
