Joe Mixon had a special 2024 season with the Houston Texans, his first year away from the Cincinnati Bengals.
He never even got to have a 2025 season, though.
Mixon was injured before the campaign started and never returned, never got on the field, never even practiced.
For basically the entirety of the season, it was kept out of the spotlight, too. There was no clarity on what had happened.

Finally, on Wednesday, Texans GM Nick Caserio provided some insight.
He revealed that Mixon had encountered a medical condition that never improved, according to beat reporter Jonathan Alexander.
“He didn’t jump off a building," Caserio said of Mixon. "He wasn’t doing anything irresponsible. It was a freak thing.”

It's not clear whether it's something that could improve by next season or not.
Mixon has one year remaining on his contract with the Texans, but it would cost them just a $2 million dead cap hit to cut him, so that seems like a possibility, as well.
Houston managed just fine at running back and can count on Woody Marks to lead the backfield for the foreseeable future.
Mixon's chances of getting back on an NFL field remain to be seen, but at least after a season of wondering, Caserio provided a small bit of clarity on this.
