With Ja'Marr Chase suspended for spitting on Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey last week, Tee Higgins took over the No.1 spot on the depth chart. During a first-and-10 play in the fourth quarter, he tried to make a jump to attempt a one-handed catch on a pass from veteran quarterback Joe Flacco.
However, Higgins was closely guarded by Carlton Davis III. The Patriots' cornerback landed on the wide receiver's body during his jump. Higgins hit his head on the ground dangerously and lay there for some time. The Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver was later carted off the field and ruled out of the game for a concussion.
The Bengals drafted Tee Higgins with the 33rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He agreed to a four-year $115 million contract extension with the team in March. This season, he has tallied 544 yards and seven touchdowns receiving on the field.
Against the Patriots on Sunday, Higgins had 35 receiving yards on five receptions. However, the Bengals ended Week 12 with a disappointing 26-20 loss at home.
NFL doctor shares honest thoughts on Tee Higgins' injury
After the game, NFL doctor David J. Chao shared his thoughts on Higgins' situation after he brutally hit his head on the ground.
He questioned his status to play in next week's game against the Baltimore Ravens.
"Unlikely, if we Tee Higgins, there will be an NFLPA induced investigation," Chao said. "He was knocked out on Sunday. It's a Thursday game. It's very had to play in four days and clear concussion protocol. Almost impossible especially with the visible symptoms that he was displayed in the quick rule out. "Tee Higgins is not going to play. I guess they're trading (him) in some ways to get back Ja'Marr Chase."The Bengals are currently placed third in the AFC North with a 3-8 record and a four-game losing streak. They will take on their division leaders, the Baltimore Ravens, on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. ET.
