Meg Ryan Breaks Silence on Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner Deaths

Rob Reiner left a lasting impression on Jerry O’Connell’s life.

Over 30 years after starring alongside Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, Will Weaton and the late River Phoenix in Rob’s 1986 coming of age film Stand by Me, Jerry still feels the impact of the kindness the filmmaker extended to him offscreen.

“Rob Reiner heard I was in L.A. and he took me out to lunch,” Jerry tearfully recalled during CBS’ Rob Reiner: Scenes From a Life special Dec. 21. “He didn’t have to do that. It was months after the movie came out. He’s a busy man, and he took a 12-year-old me out to lunch to be like, ‘Thanks so much. What a great movie.’”

“That lunch meant so much to me,” the 51-year-old added through tears. “It’s just stuff that kids need to hear.”

Jerry—who made his acting debut in the film—recalled Rob being unlike the other adults in his life, who encouraged him to “sit on your hands and shut up.”

“Not only did I not have to sit on my hands and shut up,” he shared of his time on set with Rob. “The boss man, who we all trusted, was saying man don’t sit on your hands and don’t shut up you have to be you.”

He added, “And I’ve been chasing that feeling of Rob coming over and saying that to me for my entire life since then.”

On Dec. 14, Rob and his wife of 35 years Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with their murders, with him set to appear in court next in January.

In the aftermath of their deaths, Jerry recalled being hired by Rob—also dad to Tracy Reiner, 61, with late ex Penny Marshall, as well as Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 27, with Michele—for the role in the Stephen King adaptation that would change his life.

“Rob was like a father to me,” he told Gayle King during an interview with CBS Mornings Dec. 15. “It’s just surreal. Everything I have is because of Rob Reiner. It’s just a sad, shocking day.”

Meanwhile, his other Stand by Me costars have also reflected on Rob’s legacy, including Will. "Rob was a good person who put great art into the world, who made a positive difference in more lives than any of us can imagine," the Star Trek: The Next Generation alum wrote in part on his website. "The world is a better place thanks to his activism and the way he chose to use all of his privilege and influence."

Keifer, who went on to reteam with Rob on A Few Good Men, expressed what the All in the Family alum meant to him, writing on social media, “Rob was one of the kindest gentleman I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. When I was very young he gave me an opportunity that changed my life, and I will forever be grateful.”
