Teams to enter March undefeated: 30-0 Miami (OH) joins exclusive list with win over Toledo

1 hour ago 3

The Miami (Ohio) RedHawks’ undefeated season continued into the final game of the regular season with a gritty 74–72 victory over Toledo at Millett Hall. With the win, the No. 19 RedHawks improved to 30–0, moving one step closer to completing the first perfect regular season in Mid-American Conference history.

The victory is also a rare feat in the broader landscape of college basketball history. By winning Tuesday night, Travis Steele’s squad became only the fourth team this century to enter March with an unblemished record. They joined an elite short list featuring 2004 Saint Joseph’s, 2014 Wichita State, and 2015 Kentucky — and became the first to accomplish the feat since 2021 Gonzaga. The RedHawks will look to complete the perfect run at Ohio.

Here is the exclusive list the RedHawks joined with the win Tuesday night.

Miami-Ohio next game

Next up for the RedHawks is a regular season finale against their rival, the Ohio Bobcats. The "Battle of the Bricks" will take place this Friday, March 6, at 9:00 PM EST in Athens, Ohio. For Miami, the stakes couldn't be higher: a win would secure a perfect 31–0 regular season and the first unblemished conference record in MAC history.

The matchup has been selected for a national telecast on ESPN2, highlighting the significance of Miami's pursuit of history. While the RedHawks already defeated the Bobcats 90–74 earlier this season in Oxford, they will now have to defend their undefeated streak in a hostile environment at the Convocation Center. Following this finale, the RedHawks will head to Cleveland as the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament starting March 12.

Miami-Ohio NCAA Tournament projection

Despite being 30–0, the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks’ NCAA Tournament projection is one of the most debated topics in college basketball. Because they haven't faced a ranked opponent, their "perfect" resume is being heavily scrutinized by the selection committee's metrics.

Currently, most bracketologists project the RedHawks as an 8-seed or 11-seed, depending on the region and the analyst. While their record is undeniable, their NET ranking sits around No. 52, largely due to a lack of Quadrant 1 wins.

Does Miami-Ohio have to win the MAC tournament to make the NCAA Tournament?

The short answer is probably not. If the RedHawks are able to win against Ohio in the regular-season finale, it is going to be difficult to keep them out of the field, even if they don’t win the MAC Tournament.

But if Miami (Ohio) does suffer a loss against the Bobcats, combined with not winning the tournament, that is where the conversation will get interesting.

Of course, the simplest way into the NCAA tournament is winning the MAC championship, which would give the RedHawks an automatic bid.
