The San Antonio Spurs’ undefeated start came to an end Sunday night as the Phoenix Suns handed them their first loss of the season, 130-118, at Footprint Center.
The Spurs stand at 5-1 on the season after a gut-punching loss against the Phoenix Suns
The Suns, now 3-4, snapped the Spurs’ five-game winning streak. San Antonio entered the matchup at 5-0, marking the best start in franchise history. The Spurs were again without veteran point guard De’Aaron Fox. Fox has yet to appear this season due to a lingering hamstring injury suffered over the summer.
The depth chart for the Spurs took yet another hit in the second quarter when rookie guard Dylan Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, exited with a calf injury while defending a dunk attempt by Phoenix’s Nick Richards. At halftime, it was announced that Harper would not return.
Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 26 points, while Keldon Johnson added 19 off the bench.
It wasn’t the best night for Victor Wembanyama, who finished with nine points on 4-of-14 shooting along with nine rebounds. The 7-foot-4 forward had six turnovers and was held under 10 points for the first time since Oct. 30, 2024, when Oklahoma City limited him to six. Wembanyama entered the night averaging 30.2 points and 14.6 rebounds through the Spurs’ unbeaten start.
