On June 24, the Phoenix Suns completed a massive four-team NBA Draft trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and the Dallas Mavericks.
In the multi-team transaction, the Suns acquired the 30th overall pick (Koa Peat), the Lakers acquired the No. 24 overall pick (Cameron Carr), the Mavericks acquired the draft rights to the 2026 25th overall pick (Sergio de Larrea), and the Knicks acquire the draft rights to the Melvin Ajinca (51st overall pick in 2024) and two second round picks to New York).
On Wednesday, the Suns officially signed Peat before the start of Summer League.
“Made it official,” the Suns wrote on X/Twitter while displaying an image of Peat inking a deal with the championship-less Western Conference franchise.
The fact that Peat nearly fell out of the first-round pick despite being perceived as a lottery pick to start the 2025-26 college basketball season proves that the 19-year-old’s weaknesses are real.
While Peat is a physically imposing low-post threat who’s difficult to contain when he seals off opponents and immediately goes to work, he’s a bit undersized for a power forward (6-foot-7) and is more of a bully ball player than a fundamentally sound frontcourt weapon with an array of moves in his arsenal.
It also doesn’t help that Peat is a low-volume perimeter shooter (7-20) at his height. That said, the Gilbert, Arizona native’s NBA future is bright, and if he manages to expand his game over time, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
