Suns predicted to cut ties with superstar via shocking trade to contender

As the NBA offseason looms, speculation about Kevin Durant’s future with the Phoenix Suns is heating up.

The Suns, fresh off a disappointing season, are reportedly open to reshaping their roster, and Durant, a two-time Finals MVP, could be on the move. While teams like the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder are seen as frontrunners to land the 36-year-old superstar, an unexpected dark horse could emerge.

The Rockets, flush with young talent like Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, plus draft capital, are an obvious fit for Durant, who could elevate them to contender status. Similarly, the Thunder, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a treasure trove of picks, could reunite Durant with his former team to chase a title. Yet, Forbes’ Evan Sidery suggested on Wednesday that the Denver Nuggets might be the team to watch.

“One team who should seriously consider making a push for a Kevin Durant trade this summer is the Nuggets,” Sidery wrote. “It’s on full display in the playoffs ... Denver needs another consistent alpha scorer to take some burden off Nikola Jokic. A Jokic/Durant pairing would be lethal offensively.”

Sidery’s point is compelling. The Nuggets, despite their 2023 championship, have struggled to find a reliable second scoring option alongside Jokić. Jamal Murray’s inconsistency and Michael Porter Jr.’s streaky shooting have exposed Denver’s offensive limitations.

Durant, with his effortless scoring and playoff pedigree, could seamlessly complement Jokić’s playmaking, creating a devastating pick-and-roll duo. Imagine Durant’s midrange mastery paired with Jokić’s vision.

A potential trade could involve young players like Christian Braun, draft picks, and salary fillers like Zeke Nnaji.

While Denver’s assets may not match Houston’s or OKC’s, their championship pedigree and Jokić’s prime could entice Durant. The Suns, seeking to retool around Devin Booker, might find Denver’s offer appealing if they prioritize youth and flexibility.

Though the Rockets and Thunder remain favorites, the Nuggets’ need for a second star and Durant’s fit make this a tantalizing possibility.

If Denver pulls off this blockbuster, the NBA landscape could shift dramatically.
