THE ECONOMIC TIMESWhile most major global stock markets will remain shut for trading on Thursday, January 1, Indian stock markets BSE and NSE will open for trading. The commodity exchanges The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also remain open in the first session between 9 am and 5 pm but will be closed in the evening session.
Stock exchanges in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, UAE, UK and the US will be closed on the first day of the new year.
Further, China and Japan bourses will have an extended new year holiday on Friday, January 2.
The official trading holiday calendar for 2026 was recently released by the exchanges, giving investors and traders early visibility into non-trading days across the cash and derivatives segments. The schedule, notified under the exchange bye-laws and F&O regulations, covers 15 full trading holidays during the year, along with details of holidays that fall on weekends and the annual Muhurat Trading session. 2026 will have one more holiday than the current year.
Equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives markets will remain closed for 15 days in 2026. The year begins with Republic Day on January 26 and includes major religious and national holidays such as Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, Mahavir Jayanti on March 31 and Good Friday on April 3. Markets will also be shut on Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1 and Eid al-Adha on May 28.
The second half of the year includes Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14 and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Dussehra falls on October 20, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The final trading holiday of the year will be Christmas on December 25.
The small surprise in the circular is that there is no mention of holiday for Diwali as it is falling on a weekend (Sunday).
