Steve Kerr is a nine-time NBA champion between his playing and coaching careers. But the Golden State Warriors head coach added another accolade Sunday night that grants him entry to an elite club.
Kerr, the NBA's Coach of the Year in 2016, has guided the Warriors to four NBA titles during his 12-year tenure. He won five championships as a member of the Chicago Bulls' 1990s dynasty and later with the San Antonio Spurs. However, his newest accolade away from the hardwood will be particularly meaningful for him.
How did Steve Kerr win an Oscar?
Kerr was one of the producers on the Netflix documentary short film "All the Empty Rooms," which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Kerr could not attend the ceremony, as he was coaching the Warriors in their home game against the New York Knicks. But he is now one of four former NBA players ever to win an Oscar -- alongside Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and his superstar point guard Stephen Curry.
"All the Empty Rooms" is a 33-minute documentary short that memorializes school shooting victims in the United States through showing the empty bedrooms of four children who died in those circumstances.
Kerr has been a vocal proponent of enhanced gun control legislation in the United States. Most notably, he used his pre-game press conference before Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals to impress upon lawmakers that they needed to pass such legislation after 19 students died during the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022.
