The Los Angeles Angels have yet to try to lose games, and that seems to be the case once again. That could put them in a position to land someone like Nestor Cortes as they look for cheap rotation options.
Cortes underwent surgery in the offseason and is a free agent.
Cortes built a nice career for himself during his time with the New York Yankees, but struggled a bit since the pitch clock was implemented. At his best, he’s shown the ability to be an All-Star caliber starter.
However, injuries have also been an issue. For rebuilding teams or squads looking for inning-eating pitching additions, Cortes should find a job.
Chris Landers of FanSided believes that job will be with the Angels.
“And really, what else are the Angels doing with their money? This team is perennially in need of pitching, and it's not like Cortes will be too onerous to have on the IL as he rehabs.
“There's little risk if he can't come back healthy, and the best-case scenario involves Cortes pitching well in the first half of next year before being flipped for some desperately needed prospect capital at the trade deadline. Cortes makes sense as a flier for plenty of rebuilding teams with rotation spots to fill,” he wrote.
For the Angels, a move like this could work in a few different ways. If Cortes returns to form, he could be traded at the deadline. If the Angels start to win some games, he could be useful as a No. 3 or No. 4 starter.
If all else fails, he likely won’t be anywhere near expensive enough for it to matter.
