Spending money doesn't always ensure that a team has a chance to win a World Series, and I hope that's something that gets brought up a lot during these CBA talks. I don't want to see a salary cap put in, and believe that Major League Baseball has an owner problem, not a salary issue.
I’m of the belief that deferred salaries and whatnot need to be changed, but for the most part, I want to see guys get paid what they're worth, an increase to minor league pay, and all in all, just a better life for these guys in professional baseball.
However, going back to the spending money part not always ensuring a team has a chance to win, it's interesting to look at a squad like the New York Mets as one that hasn't had an opportunity to win despite spending all that money.
And to Steve Cohen's defense, the Mets owner, he's stated multiple times that he's going to ensure his team is built by spending money, and the Mets, even if things haven't worked out, have spent a lot.
It seems like Cohen is losing a lot of money, and according to the latest from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, he actually has an operating loss in excess of $200 million. However, that doesn't seem to be too big of an issue as there is an $8 billion casino project that would be built next to Citi Field.
“While owners insist there are a number of teams losing money, at least on paper, no one is losing more money each year than Steve Cohen with the New York Mets. Yet, while the Mets may have annual operating losses in excess of $200 million, guess who’s going to become even a much richer owner?
“Yep, Steve Cohen, thanks to an $8 billion casino project that will be built next to Citi Field,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote.
This poses the question of whether Cohen is really just doing this for money. I'm also of the belief that we have to be realistic with what these owners are doing. Most of these guys are billionaires or people with hundreds of millions of dollars.
They ultimately buy Major League Baseball teams because they want to make money. It's a business decision for them, even if some of them do it properly and spend a lot.
