Steelers predicted to add 64-TD quarterback after Aaron Rodgers and Will Howard fail

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally have an answer from Aaron Rodgers, who has decided to sign with the team for the 2025 season.

While that answers that, it does not do anything for the Steelers' future at the most important position in the NFL. After all, Rodgers is already north of 40 and isn't expected to be around for more than this season.

The Steelers do have a glimmer of hope in Will Howard, who has already shown some impressive qualities in Pittsburgh. However, seeing as how he's a late-round selection, Howard is more likely to not pan out in the NFL.

If Howard fails to be the solution the Steelers are looking for, the team desperately needs to invest a high draft pick at quarterback.

In his latest mock draft, NFL Spin Zone's Sayre Bedinger has the Steelers doing that by selecting Penn State signal-caller Drew Allar with the No. 16 overall pick.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally and mercifully got Aaron Rodgers in the fold for the 2025 season, but the future of the position is still in question," he said. "You can’t help but wonder what Rodgers is planning on beyond this year, but at some point, he’s going to call it quits. The Steelers love going after local products when they have a chance and Drew Allar is a polarizing prospect at the game’s most important position. He could be a fun fit in Pittsburgh to replace Rodgers if he is one-and-done."

After three years at Penn State that has seen him throw for 6,302 yards and score 64 touchdowns in total, Allar is one of the top quarterbacks to watch for the 2026 draft.

Allar posted his best season in 2024, when he tossed for 3,327 yards and 24 scores to eight interceptions. Allar flashed his mobility with 302 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network offers a detailed scouting report for Allar that lists his strengths as "easy velocity, pure thrower of the football, strong, IDing blitzes."

As far as concerns for Allar go, Fowler lists "occasional all-arm thrower, pocket mobility" for the Penn State quarterback.

"Overall, Allar is a physically impressive quarterback with the arm talent to make every throw in a playbook," Fowler said. "While his inconsistent mechanics can often cause throws to sail into precarious situations, he’s showcased the ability to confidently lead an offense with the processing, accuracy, efficiency, and arm talent to threaten each level of a defense. Considering his success with such limited playmakers around him, Allar is a highly intriguing playmaker who can elevate those around him — a trait of a franchise signal-caller."

The Steelers should be teetering around .500 or better this coming season, which puts them in position to pick in the middle of the first round in next year's draft.

If Allar can build on what he did in 2025, the Penn State star will make his way into first-round consideration and could be on the board when the Steelers are on the clock.
