The Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers could pull off a trade involving quarterback Mac Jones this offseason.
Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine proposed a trade that would send Jones to the Steelers and edge rusher Nick Herbig to the 49ers.
San Francisco would also acquire the No. 215 overall pick in Round 6 of April's draft:
"If the Steelers can use Herbig to find a potentially long-term answer at quarterback that would be a good use of his breakout season. If the Niners can turn their backup quarterback into the player that leads the charge for their next generation of pass rush, that's a win."
Jones showed a ton of promise in 2025, starting eight games and tossing 13 touchdowns to six interceptions with a 69.6% completion rate and a 5-3 record.
Due to his fantastic performance while filling in for Brock Purdy this season, San Francisco has shown an unwillingness to deal Jones. However, if the right offer comes to the table, it could change the 49ers' minds.
If Aaron Rodgers decides not to return to Pittsburgh for the 2026 season, trading for Jones to be the bridge starter would be a savvy move from general manager Omar Khan. Jones could have success in Mike McCarthy's offense and unlock his full potential.
As for the 49ers, trading Jones for Herbig would be a solid return. Herbig has the potential to be a difference-making pass rusher, but is stuck behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith with the Steelers.
Though San Francisco doesn't want to move Jones, general manager John Lynch must consider trading his backup signal-caller if offers come in. Pittsburgh could put together a nice package to add Jones and solidify him as their starter in 2026 if Rodgers retires.
