Stars GM Jim Nill gives update on contract talks with Jason Robertson

Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill has again spoken about winger Jason Robertson's contract, which is in the fourth and final year of his $31 million deal with the franchise.

According to Bruce LeVine, Nill confirmed that he has been in talks with Robertson’s new agent, 26, but assured that they are not under pressure to close a deal soon, because the priority is on-ice performance.

“Jim Nill gave an update on the Jason Robertson contract situation,” LeVine wrote on his X account. “He has had conversations with Robertson’s new agent.”

“With the stretch run and playoffs ahead, everyone wants Robo focused on playing. There will be time in the future for more talks, but no pressing deadline,” he added.

Robertson has already demonstrated what he is capable of, and it is logical that Dallas is working to extend his contract. After 69 games this season, the Arcadia, California, native has scored 38 goals and added 44 assists for 82 total points.

Robertson averages 1.19 points per game. Elite numbers. At five-on-five, he averages 15:18 per night, 3:39 on the power play, and practically nothing on the penalty kill.

Last week, Nill had already confirmed that his priority is to keep Robertson for the long term. Speaking on NHL Network’s “NHL First Shift” with EJ Hradek, he said, “We started discussions with Jason last summer, so we’ve kept in touch, and in the end, we decided, let’s table this.”

Last summer, there were concerns about whether the Stars could afford to pay Robertson a similar salary to what they gave forward Mikko Rantanen when they acquired him ($12 million AAV) without exceeding the franchise’s salary cap.
