Evan Mobley's 2026 NBA Playoffs run should determine if the Cleveland Cavaliers move on from him

2 hours ago 3

A lot is being made of Evan Mobley's development, or lack thereof, with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The former 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Mobley, has been seen as a guy who has endless potential. Many scouting pros expected him to be a defensive-minded big man who could develop into a Tim Duncan-like power forward/center on offense. Huge expectations, but so far, half of that is true.

Mobley won the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year Award at just 23, cementing the belief that he's one of the best defensive players in the league already. While his defensive attributes aren't in doubt, his offense has been average at best. He's by no means a liability on the court, but many expected him to be the best player at both ends of the court on any given team. Right now, Mobley still needs the likes of a Donovan Mitchell-type to help the Cavs offense run smoothly.

Due to his lackluster offensive development, some wonder if he'll ever turn into the offensive player many hoped he'd be. That uncertainty has caused fans and experts alike to talk about whether or not it's time for Cleveland to move on from the big. Despite his pedestrian offensive output, many execs are excited about the possibility of landing Mobley if he becomes available.

One of those names is the Milwaukee Bucks, who wanted Mobley back in any trade for their mega-star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Cavs opted not to make the move just yet and rolled the dice with their roster mostly intact. The hope is that the Cavaliers with Mobley, Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, Jaylon Tyson, Sam Merrill, Max Strus, and James Harden would be good enough to win an NBA title in 2026.

That's the goal, but with Mitchell and Harden wavering about returning to Cleveland should the Cavs bottom out in the playoffs, the club may have to make a huge move. Not just to keep Harden and Mitchell in Cleveland, but to add another piece, namely, LeBron James. The Cavs are a rumored team on James' short list to play for during the 2026-2027 season. It's a move that many hope to see as James winds down his career. It's also a move that may not happen if the Cavs get bounced from the playoffs early.

If they get bounced early or get embarrassed in the Eastern Conference Finals or NBA Finals, then the Cavs will have to reevaluate their immediate future. A trade to land Antetokounmpo from the Bucks may be their best path forward to keep both Harden and Mitchell, while hoping to court James in a prospective return. That would mean giving up on Mobley, however, a move that may slam shut whatever long-term competitive plans the Cavaliers have.

If the Cavs look awful in this postseason but Mobley dominates, then all bets are off for how they move into the offseason. Regardless, though, it does seem unlikely that this team remains intact if the Cavaliers get humiliated in any way in the 2026 NBA Playoff.s Regardless of who gets sent off in a potential trade.
