Starbucks Stars – Get Free Coffee
The Starbucks Rewards program is based on stars you earn per dollar amount spent. For each dollar you spend, you’ll earn 1-1.7 stars depending on your membership level.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of membership tiers. Instead of everyone earning rewards in exactly the same way, the new program offers different benefits depending on how many Stars you earn each year.
Green Level: Where Everyone Starts
All new members begin at the Green level. This entry-level tier still comes with several nice perks, including a free birthday treat, personalized offers and early access to select promotions and games in the app.
Green members earn about one Star per dollar spent and can take advantage of new features like a monthly free drink customization day and bonus Star opportunities for digital reloads or promotions.
Stars at this level can expire after several months if unused, but staying active in the app by making a purchase, redeeming rewards or reloading funds can help extend their life.
Gold Level: Faster Earning and No Expiring Stars
Once you earn around 500 Stars in a year, you can move up to Gold status. This mid-tier level includes all the Green benefits plus a few valuable upgrades.
Gold members earn Stars faster roughly 20% more per dollar spent. And their Stars no longer expire, which makes it easier to save up for bigger rewards like free drinks or food.
You may also receive additional bonus Star days throughout the year and a longer window to redeem birthday rewards (up to seven days vs the one day you have to redeem it at the green level). For anyone who visits Starbucks semi-regularly, this tier can add up to meaningful savings over time.
Reserve Level: The Highest Tier
The top tier of the new program is Reserve status, which requires earning about 2,500 Stars within a 12-month period. This level is designed for the most frequent Starbucks customers and includes all the benefits of Green and Gold plus some premium perks.
Reserve members earn Stars at the fastest rate, roughly 1.7 Stars per dollar, and gain access to exclusive merchandise, special experiences and additional bonus Star opportunities throughout the year. You also get up to 30 days to redeem your free birthday drink at this tier.
While most casual customers won’t reach this tier, it shows how Starbucks is trying to reward loyalty in a more personalized way.
You can trade in your stars for different rewards along the way as you earn them:
- 25 Stars: Customize your drink
- 60 Stars (NEW Tier: Up to $2 off any item
- 100 Stars: Brewed hot or iced coffee or tea, bakery item, or packaged snack
- 200 Stars: Handcrafted drink (cold brew, lattes, etc.)
- 300 Stars: Sandwich, protein box, or at-home coffee
- 400 Stars: Select Starbucks merchandise: signature cup, tumbler, or $20 purchase

Check the App Before You Order
With the new rewards system focusing heavily on personalization, the Starbucks app is more important than ever. Many of the best deals now appear directly inside the app rather than being advertised in-store.
You may see personalized offers like bonus Star challenges, discounted drinks or “order X times to earn a free item” promotions based on your habits. Starbucks says the updated program will lean heavily into tailored offers and engagement-based rewards.
It’s worth taking a quick look at the app before you place an order. Activating a bonus offer can sometimes mean earning a free drink much faster than you expected.
Use Gift Cards and Reload Bonuses Strategically
Another simple way to save is by using Starbucks gift cards, especially when combined with rewards bonuses. The new program includes occasional bonus Stars when you reload a certain amount to your app balance, helping you earn rewards even before you make a purchase.
You can sometimes find Starbucks gift cards on sale around the holidays or through grocery store promotions, which can stretch your coffee budget even further.
Make Starbucks a Planned Treat
As much as I enjoy a good coffee run, I’ve found it helps to treat Starbucks as a planned expense rather than an impulse stop. Setting a small monthly budget or deciding ahead of time how often you’ll go can help you enjoy it guilt-free while still staying on track financially.
When you combine intentional spending with the rewards program, bonus Star days and occasional gift card deals, Starbucks can feel much more affordable.
Starbucks Coupons & Promo Code FAQ
The best way to get a discount at Starbucks is to make sure you’re signed up for Starbucks rewards and use your app every time you purchase. You’ll accumulate stars and be able to trade them in for free drinks, food, and more!
On Double Star Days, Starbucks Rewards members earn twice the normal number of Stars on their entire purchase, but the exact amount you earn depends on your membership tier.
If you’re a Gold member, you typically earn 1.2 Stars per dollar spent. On Double Star Days, that amount doubles to 2.4 Stars per dollar. So for example, if you spend $10 during a Double Star Day, you’d earn about 24 Stars instead of 12. Gold members receive at least four additional Double Star Days each year, making this one of the easiest ways to rack up Stars quickly.
If you’ve reached Reserve status, you normally earn 1.7 Stars per dollar spent. On Double Star Days, that doubles to 3.4 Stars per dollar. That means a $10 purchase could earn around 34 Stars instead of 17. Reserve members also receive at least six Double Star Days annually, giving them even more opportunities to earn rewards faster. Taking advantage of Double Star Days can make a big difference if you’re already planning a Starbucks run.
After 400 stars, you’ll keep earning until you decide to trade them in for a free purchase. But be careful..your Stars could expire in six months without qualifying monthly activity if you’re at the Green membership level.
Unfortunately, no. That is no longer a weekly promotion.
Yes, your stars expire after 6 months of inactivity at the Green membership level. But Stars never expire at the Gold and Reserve membership levels.
