The San Antonio Spurs are running back a lot of the same roster that they had a year ago, and it isn't the worst idea.
For arguably the most talented young team that also just made it to the NBA Finals, it makes sense to give this team another shot. If the Spurs don't believe they have enough to win a championship at the trade deadline, that's when they can go out and make a move to improve on either side of the basketball.
Among the many options that will eventually be on the trade market, Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington stands out as one of the best.
Washington has been a very nice player with the Dallas Mavericks and would fit in well with what the Spurs are trying to build. He can defend every position on the court and knock down open shots when needed.
One writer believes that he could be the perfect trade candidate in a deal including Harrison Barnes.
“San Antonio signed Harris to fill a need at power forward, but he wouldn’t be the first veteran that couldn’t find a fit on a new roster. Harris only got a two-year deal. If things aren’t working out, the Spurs could quickly look to flip him. Ideal target: PJ Washington
“Washington is just starting a four-year, $88.7 million contract and has been in trade rumors given Dallas’ glut of forwards. They have Cooper Flagg and just extended Naji Marshall. Dallas could look to move on Washington to better balance out their roster,” Tyler Watts wrote.
Obviously, the Spurs wouldn't be able to trade Barnes straight up to the Mavericks for Washington, but they have more than enough assets draft-pick-wise to figure something out on that front.
