Browns urged to make Dillon Gabriel trade decision that is makes perfect sense

The Cleveland Browns are holding a quarterback competition right now, and with the preseason just days away, there is no clear leader.

But there is one thing that's already well known at this point: Dillon Gabriel will not be the starter. It's firmly a two-man race between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson.

So, when Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report urges the Browns to place Gabriel on the trade block before the 2026 season begins, it makes perfect sense as the only logical option for the Browns amid their current QB competition.

"Gabriel is unlikely to bring in a big return in a trade, but with Cleveland moving in a new direction, it should make him available," Knox writes.

Placing Gabriel on the trade block likely won't garner a whole lot of attention. He didn't exactly look great during his stint in the regular season last year for the Browns.

But Gabriel is a former third-round QB who is under contract on a very cheap deal for the next three seasons. Some teams will see the value in Gabriel.

The Browns likely won't be going to Gabriel anytime soon, with either Sanders or Watson being named QB1, and the other becoming the backup for the 2026 season.

Gabriel is firmly entrenched in the QB3 spot for the Browns. That isn't ideal for him to see any playing time this season.

Instead, it makes more sense to trade him away before the 2026 season begins, allowing them to more easily keep Taylen Green and also land some draft pick compensation for Gabriel.

It likely wouldn't be much of anything in return for a QB who didn't play well in his NFL action, but the Browns should receive a Day 3 draft pick.

Getting back that third-round pick isn't going to happen, but the Browns should be able to trade Gabriel and walk away happy with their return package for a player who likely was never seeing the field this season.

The 25-year-old QB is being urged to be put on the trade block by Knox, and it's the only sensible option for the Browns this summer. Gabriel isn't in their long-term plans, nor their short-term plans. A trade makes too much sense not to happen.
