The San Antonio Spurs clearly have their foundational building block, Victor Wembanyama.
Their task as they prove how good they are is to ensure he's surrounded by the best pieces to make him, and the entire team, successful.
It's not clear that Jeremy Sochan fits that bill anymore.
The Athletic's John Hollinger wrote that Sochan is a buyout candidate now that the NBA trade deadline has come and gone.
"He can’t shoot and struggles as a backup five, and we’ve definitely determined he’s not a point guard, which is why he can’t get any run in San Antonio," Hollinger wrote. "He needs to go back to a more developmental situation and figure out where his game fits."

Sochan was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Baylor.
He's still just 22 years old, but this season he's averaging only 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
Sochan is shooting just 25.7% from 3-point range and 68.8% from the foul line.

Without a shooting stroke and without a clear-cut position, Sochan doesn't have a way to fill a straightforward role on a contender.
As Hollinger writes, he could use a reset button to see what his NBA career is meant to look like.
That doesn't seem all that likely to happen in San Antonio at this point.
