SN 140 Moments: No. 52 - Don Larsen throws only perfect game in World Series history

16 hours ago 2

With only 24 perfect games in MLB history, the chances of seeing one in a given game are close to 1-in-10,000. Those odds indicate that seeing a perfect game in the World Series should be even more unlikely, given the offensive skill it takes to get there and the way hitters scrap for every possible opportunity to get on base.

In 1956, however, it happened: Don Larsen pitched a perfect game in the World Series, silencing the Dodgers in Game 5 of a series the Yankees would win in seven games. Larsen, who would spend most of his career as a journeyman, navigated with ease around a Dodgers lineup featuring Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella and even an aging Jackie Robinson.

Pinch-hitter Dale Mitchell stood as the final obstacle between Larsen and history until a check-swing on a 1-2 count sent Yankee Stadium into elation and Yogi Berra into the waiting arms of his pitcher. To this day, there has never been another perfect game in the postseason, let alone in the World Series.
